Japanese pediatric acupuncture, referred to as Shonishin (sho=little, ni=children, shin=needle) is a specialized and refined form of treatment for infants and children that became renowned in region of Osaka, Japan. Parents and children like Shonishin because it is not painful nor intrusive, and thus not scary to the child. Japanese parents regularly take their children to acupuncturists for shonishin treatment.
Shonishin is gentle and comfortable for children. It involves non-invasive treatment techniques with the use of specialized tools that provide very delicate stimulation, which may involve rhythmic stroking, rubbing, tapping, and pressing the skin. Though seemingly subtle, Shonishin effectively treats numerous conditions common in childhood and fortifies a child’s vital energy, thereby helping to strengthen their constitution, maintain health and promote well-being.
Treatments for children are very brief, generally increasing as the child ages. Actual treatment takes between three to fifteen minutes to perform as children respond quickly. Allowing for familiarity a typical session will take no more than twenty minutes. I'm pleased to hear often from parents that their child is the one who asked to return for treatment.
Shonishin is used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including:
- Failure to thrive syndrome
- Excessive night crying; Night terrors; Temper tantrums
- Colic, indigestion, constipation, and diarrhea
- Allergies, asthma, cough, and colds
- Adjusting to Major Life Changes, ie. new home, school, separation, loss
Seasonal Tune-ups can help keep your child happy and well
A convenient "Parent-Child" session is also available where both are treated at the same visit at a reduced rate. All that's required to get started is the parent to complete an
initial visit consultation.
